Eye Problems In Your Child

When you see your child every day, it can be hard to notice that certain things may be going on with them when you get used to seeing them act consistently each and every day. However, you want to pay attention to some things to make sure you are staying on top of them and can have them taken care of as soon as possible. Two things to watch your child regularly for are hearing problems and vision problems. With regards to vision problems, here are some of the signs that you may see that should be taken as possible red flags.

Your child seems clumsy

While inner ear problems can also cause a child to become off balance, vision problems can also cause your child to seem clumsy. They may trip over things you feel they should have seen. They may also bump into furniture when they are walking and should have seen the piece of furniture. They may also seem clumsy in other ways. While children can be careless, there is a difference between carelessness and not seeing things they should. If you have any doubt about your child just being careless and you feel there is even a light chance they are having issues seeing, then you should take them in to the optometrist for an eye exam.

You see a drop in their grades

If your child usually has one type of grades, such as As and Bs and you are seeing that they are now bringing home Cs, then you want to start with a talk to their teacher. They may be being bullies, they may be talking excessively in class, or they may not be able to see the chalkboard and/or their schoolwork as well as they used to. If there is a possibility that their grades have changed due to vision problems, then you want to have them get an eye exam.

You notice your child is having a harder time reading their books

When you are reading with your child, you may see that they are taking more time to pronounce the words than they used to. They may also squint all of a sudden when they are reading, or even pull the book closer to their face. If you are starting to notice that any of these things are becoming newly developed habits in your child, then you want them to get an eye exam, they may need to wear prescription glasses that will help them in all the above areas.
