Your LASIK Questions Answered

Thanks to LASIK surgery, more and more people are finding freedom from gasses. However, this is still a relatively new procedure, and many people have concerns and questions. If you are considering laser eye surgery, but are worried about what to expect, check out these commonly asked questions.

Does the Procedure Hurt?

You shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure because the doctor will numb your eyes first. However, you may feel some pressure as the laser adjusts the cornea. The doctor may also prescribe some medication to help keep you relaxed during the procedure.

Immediately after treatment, your eyes will still be numb, but after a few hours, you may notice some irritation, itching, and dryness. Your doctor will prescribe drops to help with dryness and itching. Make sure you avoid rubbing your eyes if they do itch.

What If I Move My Eye?

During the procedure, a laser is shined into the eye to reshape the cornea. For this reason, many people fear laser eye surgery because they may move their eyes or blink during the procedure. First, uncontrollable eye movement is normal and expected during any LASIK procedure. Rather than making you stay still, the laser is able to track the movement, so it can deliver pulses to the right area.

Second, you can't close your eye during the procedure because the doctor will use a speculum to hold the eyelids open. While the speculum shouldn't hurt, it may cause some pressure.

How Long Does LASIK Take?

LASIK is a fast treatment that usually only takes about 15 minutes. Of course, before the actual procedure, you'll need to have an eye examination. Plus, if you wear contacts, you'll have to switch to glasses for a while because contacts affect the shape of your corneas.

After the procedure, you should start to notice results immediately, but it may take longer to fully see results as your eyes heal. Typically, your doctor will recommend resting the remainder of the day, but most people return to work the following day. In rare instances, people may experience fluctuating vision, halos around lights, and light sensitivity.

LASIK can be a great way to get rid of your glasses once and for all. While it is still a relatively new procedure, more and more people are choosing it because of its amazing benefits and results.
